The weekly 'Sóller' was founded on July 11th, 1885 by Joan Marquès Arbona, who directed the newspaper until, upon his death, he was replaced by Miquel Marquès Coll.

Ever since 1885 the first local newspaper of Sóller has been available to the inhabitants of the area despite periods of

great difficulty, epecially during the Spanish Civil War, when a lack of paper very nearly caused it's closure.

In the early days the 'Sóller' was entirely produced in Sóller, in the carrer de Sant Bartomeu. This was a difficult task as the letters had to be set one by one, so that the paper could be on the streets every Saturday.

In 1973, when the 'Sóller' was on the verge of bankruptcy, the Serra Group took the reins, for the token payment of one peseta. From this time the weekly 'Sóller' was able to survive until, in 1996, Sóller Publicacions S.L. took charge in collaboration with the Serra Group.

At present the offices of the paper are at Carrer de la Victòria, 1,1ª and informs of occurrences that take place in Sóller and the surrounding area, be it concerning politics, news, sports, culture and religion, as well as having a section dedicated to personal opinion, in which have appeared numerous articles by well known personalities.

One of the peculiarities of this weekly paper, and fruit of the large migratory movement of the people of Sóller over the years, is that, due to far off subscribers, it reaches all five continents.

The 'Sóller', the 'Grand old man' of Balearic weeklies, also appears in internet at www.diaridebalears.com/soller with a summary of local news that is updated every Monday. The 'Sóller' e-mail is: soller@atlas-iap.es

The actual run of the 'Sóller' is 2,500 copies weekly, which are printed at the Serra Groups premises in the Son Castelló industrial estate on the outskirts of Palma, together with the 'Diari de Balears', 'Ultima Hora' and other Group Serra publications.
