Francesca Spille, 2001.

I have had a longstanding fascination for old documents and papers. They represent ´happenings of all sorts that were thought to be important enough to write down, a record to be kept, to be remembered in the lives of people past and present.

I have collected endless relics and letters in all languages and, for every collage that I piece together, the final product is an assemblage of different worlds.

This series of painted collages is based on my own ' Book of the American Chinese' - works inspired by a 1964 San Francisco Chinatown newspaper. All the calligraphy, to me, looks like poetry, but is, in fact, mundane advertisements for pest control and life insurance.

The painting in these pieces is inspired by a Japanese master calligrapher who taught me the 'art' of moving a paintbrush.
