The Natural History Museum of the Balearic Islands
The Museu Balear de Ciències Naturals opened its doors to the public in 1992.

The museum's main objective is to make people (young people as well as adults) aware of the natural variety that Balears possesses. It carries out, as well, several research projects. Their main fields of study are geology, zoology, and mycology. Finally, the museum encourages the preservation of natural history collections.

ACTIVITIES
The Museu Balear de Ciències Naturals has different programmes for schools that range from guided tours around the museum and the garden to workshops about nature sciences.

Sa Nostra's cultural institution "Obra Social i Cultural" and the Museum work together in the creation and publishing of didactic materials adapted to different learning levels.

Apart from that, courses, exhibitions, seminars and congresses are organized in order to show the public the Balears' natural heritage.

EXHIBITIONS
Permanent exhibition Permanent exhibitions:
  • History of Natural Sciencies in the Balears. The most important naturalists from the Balears ranging from the Enlightening movements till nowadays.

Temporary exhibitions:
The Museum holds its own exhibitions as well as exhibitions organised by other institutions. The last exhibitions held have been:

COLLECTIONS
Thanks to the Museum's politics of giving continuity to the preservation of fossil, rock, fungus, crustacea and insects collection, among others, any expert and anyone interested can nowadays access them. The most important collections are:

microfossils The Colom Collection (micropaleontology)
More than 20.000 preparations of microfossils and a specialised library that includes more than 12.000 books, form the collection that bears the name of the naturalist from Sóller Guillem Colom i Casanovas (1900-1993).
fossils The Bauzá Collection (palaeontology)
The palaeontological collection created by Joan Bauzá Rullan is especially rich in fishes and has the most important fossil archive in the Balearics.
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
The different collaborators that work in the different departments of the Museum work on research projects about the fauna, flora and geography of the Balears. Currently, there are several research projects running in the following areas: entomology, carcinology, mycology, speleology, karst sciences and regional geology.

FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM AND THE BOTANIC GARDEN
The Association of the Museu Balear de Ciències Naturals is a non-profit institution that was created in 1981 aimed at funding and managing the Museum and the botanic garden. Nowadays it has more than 350 associates. Their financial contribution is fundamental to ensure the museum's work.
